A bathroom renovation is one of the highest-return investments you can make in your home.
But it's also one of the easiest to get wrong if the planning isn't right.
After hundreds of bathroom builds across Adelaide, here are the five things we always recommend nailing down before any work begins.
1. Set a realistic budget — and a contingency
Most homeowners underestimate bathroom reno costs. A good rule of thumb: whatever you think it'll cost, add 15–20% as a contingency for the unexpected. Hidden water damage, outdated plumbing, or a layout change mid-build all cost money. Plan for it, and you won't be caught off guard.
2. Decide on layout changes early
Moving a toilet or shower means moving plumbing — which means more cost, more time, and often more permits. If you're going to change the layout, decide before quoting starts. If you're keeping the layout, you'll save thousands.
3. Choose your fixtures and finishes before quoting
Tiles, vanities, tapware, lighting — get these locked in before the quote. Tile choice especially affects pricing dramatically (large format tiles take longer to lay, mosaics need more precision). Walking into a showroom with vague ideas leads to vague quotes.
4. Plan around how you actually live
A beautiful bathroom that doesn't suit your family won't feel like a win. Think about storage, lighting, ventilation, and who uses the space. A second sink might matter more than a feature wall. A heated towel rail might matter more than a fancy mirror.
5. Allow time for proper waterproofing
Waterproofing isn't where you cut corners. Done badly, it leads to leaks, mould, and ruined tile work down the track. Always confirm your tiler is certified, and never let anyone rush this step. Two days of proper waterproofing saves twenty years of regret.
